Yes, a notary can come to the hospital. A hospital room does not prevent a notarial act, as long as the signer is present, has identification, understands what is being signed, and is signing willingly. I handle these appointments at 2 a.m. the same way I handle them at 2 p.m.

Many of these calls come at difficult hours and on short notice. A parent is admitted, and a power of attorney must be signed tonight. A surgery is scheduled for the morning. A family member is being held, and paperwork must be witnessed before a court date. That is why my appointments are available around the clock.

Detention facilities set their own rules about visitors, identification and what a notary may bring inside. When you call, please tell me what the facility told you, and I will plan the visit around its rules.

Please have these ready: unexpired photo identification for every signer, the complete document, and any witnesses the document requires. Hospital and facility staff are not always able to serve as witnesses, so please arrange witnesses in advance when you can.
